Partnership, made easy

💡 The idea

Partners share the profit in the same ratio as the money they put in (and for how long).

Ali $2,000 → 2 partsBen $3,000 → 3 parts
Profit is split 2 : 3

🧭 The method: 3 steps

  1. Write each partner’s money. If they joined at different times, use money × months.
  2. Simplify to a ratio and add the parts.
  3. Share the profit by those parts.

✏️ Worked examples

Example 1. Ali puts in $2,000 and Ben $3,000. Profit $1,500. Ali’s share?

  1. Ratio 2,000 : 3,000 = 2 : 3
  2. Parts = 5, so 1 part = 1,500 ÷ 5 = 300
  3. Ali = 2 parts = $600

Example 2. Sara puts $4,000 in for 12 months; Leo puts $6,000 in for 4 months. Ratio?

  1. Sara: 4,000 × 12 = 48,000
  2. Leo: 6,000 × 4 = 24,000
  3. Ratio = 2 : 1

⚠️ Where people go wrong

  • If someone joins later, their money worked for fewer months: multiply by the months.
  • Divide by the total parts, not by one person’s parts.

📌 Remember

  • Share ∝ money × time
